Leopoldo López

I just read a very insightful interview of Leopold López in the magazine Monocle. It was him who stopped President H. Chávez changing the constitution and this November he hopes to be elected to mayor of Caracas. He promises changes against the failure of Chávez’s policies. He has been mayor of Chacao for 8 years and did an incredible job: he has significantly reduced crime rates, has found a feasible system of waste disposal collection for Chacao.

I personally think it will be interesting to have him running the capital’s government but I wonder if he is aware that Macao’s population is 73 thousands and Caracas’ is 5 million.

Some facts about him:

1993 He studied Economics at Kenyon College, Ohio.

1996 He obtained a Master of Public Policy in Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

2007 He received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from his Alma Mater, Kenyon College.

A leading Venezuelan newspaper, El Nacional, named López its 2003 Person of the Year, describing him as one of the most notable leaders of the opposition to Chávez and as the best mayor of the metropolitan area of Caracas.
